Gaspare Spatuzza is a former Italian mafia member who became a crucial witness in the so-called "Maxi Trial" against the Sicilian Mafia, also known as Cosa Nostra. Spatuzza was born in Palermo, Sicily, in 1964, and became a member of the Cosa Nostra at a young age. He later became a high-ranking member of the Santapaola crime family in Catania.
Spatuzza was arrested in 1997 for his involvement in various criminal activities, including drug trafficking, extortion, and murder. While in prison, he decided to collaborate with the authorities and confessed to his criminal activities, as well as providing essential information about the Cosa Nostra's structure, activities and top members.
In 2006, Spatuzza's testimony was critical in the Maxi Trial that led to the conviction of more than 350 members of the Sicilian Mafia, including top boss Bernardo Provenzano. Spatuzza's testimony also implicated former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's close associates in mafia-related activities.
Spatuzza was sentenced to life in prison for his criminal activities but is now serving a reduced sentence due to his collaboration with authorities.
